La Trappe is the beer brand of Brouwerij De Koningshoeven, located on the grounds of the Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven abbey in Berkel-Enschot, in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The brewery has been producing beer within the abbey walls since 1884, making it one of the oldest and most storied Trappist breweries in the world. The name La Trappe is derived from the French abbey Notre-Dame de la Grande Trappe in the Normandy village of Soligny-la-Trappe, the birthplace of the Trappist monastic tradition founded in 1098. As one of only fourteen certified Trappist breweries in the world, La Trappe brews a diverse portfolio of authentic Trappist ales. The beers undergo bottle conditioning — filled with beer, yeast, and sugar — allowing them to continue fermenting in the bottle and develop complex, layered aromas over time. This traditional approach to fermentation is central to the character and quality that defines the La Trappe range. Among the notable beers in the portfolio is the La Trappe Isid'or, named as an ode to the founder of the brewery, offering a fresh and fruity flavour with a well-balanced bitterness and sweetness. La Trappe is distributed internationally, including across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, and is recognised globally as one of the most authentic representatives of the Trappist brewing tradition.
