St. Bernardus is a renowned Belgian brewery located in Watou, a small town in the heart of West Flanders. Its history dates back to around 1900, when Trappist monks from the Catsberg (Mont des Cats) fled to the region and established a cheese farm. Brewing activity at the site began in 1946, when the brewery entered into an official licensing agreement with the Abbey of Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren to produce their iconic Trappist beers. This arrangement continued until 1976, after which the brewery — by then renamed St. Bernardus — continued brewing independently using its own recipes and centuries-old traditions. Today, St. Bernardus maintains a focused portfolio of nine beers, each with a distinctive color that reflects the brewery's striking branding. The range spans classic Belgian abbey styles, including the Pater 6, Prior 8, Abt 12, and a Tripel, alongside a refreshing Wit, a Christmas Ale added to the lineup in 2006, and a non-alcoholic Tripel 0.0. The flagship St. Bernardus Abt 12 — a rich and complex Belgian quadruple — is consistently ranked among the finest beers in the world. The brewery has also embraced collaboration, serving as the official Belgian importer for the German Weihenstephan brewery for nearly a decade, and even releasing a joint collaboration beer. St. Bernardus has invested significantly in production capacity and a modern visitor center, making Watou a true destination for beer lovers seeking an authentic Belgian brewery experience.
