Affligem is one of Belgium's most storied abbey beer brands, with roots stretching back to 1074, when a group of Belgian knights laid down their swords and became monks in the village of Affligem. The abbey they founded developed a brewing tradition that has endured for nearly a millennium, making Affligem one of the oldest continuously referenced brewing heritages in the world. The label "anno 1074" on Affligem bottles reflects this extraordinary historical legacy. The Affligem range centres on classic Belgian abbey beer styles, including a Blonde, Dubbel, and Tripel. According to tradition, the Tripel was originally brewed as a stronger beer for the monks to consume during Advent and Lent, when their regular beer intake was restricted. These beers are characterised by their rich malt character, complex fermentation profiles, and the craftsmanship associated with the abbey brewing tradition. Over the centuries, ownership of the brewery has changed hands several times. Production moved to the Op-Ale brewery in Opwijk, Belgium, which was licensed by Affligem Abbey to brew under the brand name. In 2010, the brand became part of the Alken-Maes portfolio, and it is today part of Heineken's international brand portfolio, giving Affligem global reach while maintaining its Belgian abbey identity.
