Fuller's traces its roots to the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, London, where beer has been brewed on the same site since the late 17th century. The brewery as it is known today was formally established in 1845, when John Bird Fuller, Henry Smith, and John Turner joined forces to create Fuller, Smith & Turner. For over 170 years, Fuller's remained one of the few surviving regional family brewers in the United Kingdom, weathering two World Wars and generations of change while staying rooted in west London. The brewery built its reputation on classic British ale styles, with London Pride standing as its most iconic beer — a full-bodied, copper-coloured bitter that became one of England's best-loved ales. Fuller's portfolio also includes ESB (Extra Special Bitter), widely regarded as a benchmark for the style, as well as seasonal and specialty brews such as Fuller's 1845, a bottle-conditioned strong ale. In 2013, the brewery expanded into keg beer with the launch of Frontier, a modern craft lager. In 2019, Fuller, Smith & Turner sold its brewing and distribution business, including the Griffin Brewery and the London Pride brand, to Japanese drinks group Asahi for £250 million. The sale marked the end of an era for one of Britain's most storied independent breweries, though the Fuller's beer brands continue to be produced at the historic Chiswick site.
