Duvel Moortgat

Duvel Moortgat is an independent, family-controlled Belgian brewery with roots stretching back to 1871, when Jan-Leonard Moortgat and his wife Maria de Bock founded the brewery in Breendonk, in the province of Antwerp. Over 150 years later, the brewery remains under family ownership and has grown from a small regional operation into one of Belgium's most respected names in specialty beer. That remarkable continuity speaks to both the quality of their brewing and the family's unwavering commitment to their craft. At the heart of the Duvel Moortgat portfolio sits Duvel itself, a legendary Belgian Golden Strong Ale that has become one of the most recognisable specialty beers in the world. Brewed with meticulous attention to fermentation and conditioning, it is the beer that defines the brewery's identity. Beyond Duvel, the group has expanded its family of breweries considerably: in 2006 it acquired Brasserie d'Achouffe in Wallonia, in 2008 it took over the historic Liefmans brewery in Oudenaarde, and in 2010 it added De Koninck, the iconic city brewery of Antwerp, to its portfolio. Duvel Moortgat's reach extends beyond Belgium. The company was one of the founding partners of Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York, in 1997, bringing Belgian brewing traditions to the American craft beer scene. Across all its breweries, Duvel Moortgat positions itself as a group of authentic craft breweries, united by a dedication to quality and a leading role in the world of specialty beers.
