About
Duvel is the flagship beer of Brouwerij Moortgat, a family brewery founded in 1871 in Steenhuffel, Belgium. Originally launched in 1923 as Victory Ale, it was renamed Duvel shortly after. This strong golden ale is brewed from two-row summer malts and sugar syrup in roughly 76% to 24% ratio, combined with Czech Saaz and Slovenian Styrian Golding hops—varieties prized for their consistent aromatic quality. Duvel presents a bright, golden colour topped by a voluminous foam head. The aroma is distinctly herbal and grassy, with floral notes reminiscent of pear drops and white pepper. On the palate, it balances a dry, slightly bitter character with subtle fruit esters and a touch of sweetness. Bottle refermentation delivers crisp, lively carbonation and a clean, dry finish that lingers pleasantly without heaviness despite its 8.5% alcohol.
