Paulaner is one of the world's most recognised German breweries, with roots stretching back to 1634 when Paulaner monks founded a brewery at the Neudeck monastery in Munich, Bavaria. The brewery takes its name from the Franciscan order of Paulaner friars who brewed beer on the site. Over the centuries, Paulaner grew from a monastic brewing tradition into one of Munich's six major Oktoberfest breweries. In 1928, the revived Paulaner Brewery merged with the Gebrüder Thomas Bierbrauerei to form Paulaner Salvator Thomas Bräu, further cementing its place in Bavarian brewing history. Today, Paulaner produces approximately 2.4 million barrels of beer annually and brews a well-respected line of traditional German styles, including Hefeweizen, Märzen, Festbier and Doppelbock. The brewery is perhaps best known internationally for its Hefe-Weißbier, widely regarded as one of Germany's most popular wheat beers. Paulaner adheres to the traditions of German brewing craft, using quality malt and hops to produce balanced, characterful lagers and ales true to Bavarian style. One of its most iconic beers is the Salvator Doppelbock, a strong dark beer with deep historical ties to the monastery brewing tradition.
