Paulaner Salvator is a Doppelbock with over 375 years of brewing heritage. Franciscan monks at the Neudeck ob der Au Monastery in Munich created this strong beer in accordance with the Purity Law of 1516. After secularization during the Napoleonic Wars, the brewery was taken over in 1799, yet the original recipe has endured with only minor refinements. The beer displays a deep chestnut-brown colour beneath a caramel-tinted head. Its aroma evokes toffee, dark bread and cocoa, with delicate notes of cherry-vanilla and malted milk. On the palate, sweet malt and honey lead into chocolate and caramel, finishing with gentle bitterness and warming alcohol. Full-bodied and creamy, Salvator masks its strength (7.9% ABV) with remarkable balance. Paulaner crafts it using Hallertau hops, Munich yeast and select brewing malts, maintaining the monastic tradition that made this beer a blueprint for the Doppelbock style.
