Spencer Brewery is located on the grounds of St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, approximately 60 miles west of Boston. Founded and operated by the Trappist monks of St. Joseph's Abbey, the brewery opened its doors in 2014 after years of preparation, making it the first and only Trappist abbey brewery in the United States — and the only one outside of Europe. The brewery operates from a 36,000 square foot facility with a 50-barrel brewhouse, built on the monastery grounds in keeping with the centuries-old Trappist tradition of self-sufficiency through craft. Spencer Brewery's portfolio follows the Belgian Trappist tradition, producing ales rooted in craftsmanship, monastic discipline, and quality ingredients. Their beers reflect the character of classic Belgian abbey styles, with offerings that include rich, malt-forward ales. Among their releases, the Spencer Trappist Ale was the brewery's inaugural beer, and their quadrupel is described as a full-bodied and robust ale with notes of dried plums, mild spices, and roasted coffee with a subtly sweet finish. The brewery earned the prestigious Authentic Trappist Product designation, placing it among the most respected Trappist breweries in the world. Spencer distributed its beers across several U.S. states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, and Michigan. After more than a year of deliberation by the monastic community, the brewery announced its closure, bringing an end to a groundbreaking chapter in American craft brewing history.
