Privatbrauerei Eichbaum is one of Germany's oldest breweries, with roots stretching back to 3 October 1679, when Walloon councillor Jean du Chêne was awarded a brewery licence by the town of Mannheim. He named his brewpub after the German translation of his own surname — Eichbaum, meaning 'oak tree' — a name that has endured for over three centuries. The brewery is located in Mannheim, in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany, and remains deeply embedded in the local culture and identity of the city and surrounding Palatine area. Over the centuries, Eichbaum has built a broad portfolio rooted in classic German brewing tradition. The brewery is best known for its lager-style beers, including the Ureich Premium Pils, a German-style Pils with 4.8% ABV that has become a signature product. Alongside its traditional offerings, Eichbaum has also demonstrated expertise in craft beer, reflecting a willingness to evolve with changing tastes in the beer landscape. In recent years, Eichbaum has faced financial headwinds, filing for self-administration in October 2025 as part of a restructuring effort. Despite these challenges, the brewery continues to be a landmark institution in Mannheim, with a history spanning more than 345 years that cements its place as one of the most storied brewing names in German beer culture.
