Westvleteren Abbey, formally known as the Abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren, is a Trappist monastery located in Westvleteren, in the West Flanders region of Belgium. The abbey has been home to a brewing tradition stretching back to the nineteenth century, with monks producing beer primarily to support the financial needs of their monastic community. Following World War II, the monks sought assistance brewing beyond the monastery walls and partnered with outside brewers to help meet demand during difficult times. The brewery produces a small and highly selective range of Trappist ales, brewed according to strict guidelines that require production to take place within or under the supervision of the monastery. The beers are known for their rich, complex character and deep malt-driven profiles, representing some of the most sought-after examples of the Belgian Trappist tradition. Distribution is intentionally limited, and the beers are traditionally sold directly from the abbey gate. Westvleteren 12, a dark quadrupel-style ale, has repeatedly been cited among the finest beers in the world and carries an exceptional reputation among beer enthusiasts globally. The scarcity of the beers, combined with the authentic monastic brewing context, makes Westvleteren Abbey one of the most revered names in the world of Trappist brewing.
