Het Zotte Kalf, which translates roughly as 'The Crazy Calf', is a rural craft brewery based in Winsum, in the Dutch province of Groningen. The brewery has its roots on a working farm, where young cattle once shared their barn with a brewing installation — a charming origin that continues to define the brewery's identity. This deep connection to the countryside is reflected in everything from the brewery's nickname, Plattelandsbrouwerij ('rural brewery'), to the playful spirit that runs through its entire operation. The portfolio at Het Zotte Kalf is as characterful as its backstory. The brewery names its beers after cattle breeds and farm animals, giving the range a distinctive and memorable personality. Among the most popular beers are 'Barrosã', a blonde ale named after a Portuguese cattle breed, 'Salorn', a rich tripel, and 'Galloway', a porter that takes its name from the hardy Scottish breed. The combination of traditional Dutch brewing craft with rural humour and creative naming makes Het Zotte Kalf stand out within the Groningen craft beer scene. The brewery participates in regional beer festivals and events, including Bierfestival 050 in Groningen, where it appears alongside other respected local brewers such as Bax Bier, Brouwerij Hoogkerk and De Prael. Its beers can also be found at specialist beer cafés in and around Groningen.
