Brewery

Hoegaarden

Hoegaarden is one of the world's most iconic Belgian wheat beers, with a history stretching back to 1445, when the first witbier was brewed in the village of Hoegaarden in the Flemish Brabant region of Belgium. The style is said to have originated among farming communities and monasteries in the 14th century, and monks played a central role in establishing the brewing tradition in the village. After the witbier style nearly disappeared in the early twentieth century — when multiple breweries in Hoegaarden were still operating but eventually closed — Pierre Celis revived it in 1966, rekindling the tradition using the time-honoured recipe that dates back to 1445. Hoegaarden is brewed as an unfiltered witbier, giving it its characteristic hazy, pale golden appearance. The recipe calls for a distinctive combination of coriander and orange peel, delivering a flavour profile that is both sweet and tart with a refreshing complexity. The portfolio has since expanded to include variations such as Hoegaarden Citrus, a summer-oriented offering, and Hoegaarden Agrum, brewed with both the peel and fruit of the orange. Today the brand is owned by AB InBev and is positioned as a leading global super-premium beer brand, brewed at large scale including production volumes destined for markets such as China.
