Brouwerij Roman
Belgium · Founded in 1545
Brouwerij Roman is one of Belgium's oldest and most storied family breweries, located in Mater, a village near Oudenaarde in the East Flanders region. Founded in 1545 by Joos Roman, the brewery has remained in the hands of the Roman family for nearly five centuries, making it a living testament to Belgium's rich brewing heritage. Few breweries in the world can claim such an unbroken lineage of family ownership and craft. The brewery is known for a diverse portfolio that reflects the traditions of the Oudenaarde brewing region, a historic area long associated with distinctive brown ales. Among its most celebrated beers are the Ename abbey beer range and the Adriaen Brouwer series, which pay homage to the famous Flemish painter who was born in Oudenaarde. The flagship Adriaen Brouwer Audenaerds Bruyn is a classic example of the Oudenaarde-style brown ale: slow-drinking, malt-forward, and deeply rooted in local tradition. The brewery also produces Romy Pils as part of its broader range. Brouwerij Roman has earned recognition both at home and internationally, with medals at Belgian beer competitions. The brewery's long history, combined with its commitment to maintaining regional beer styles, has cemented its reputation as a cornerstone of Belgian brewing culture.
