Brouwerij Kazematten is a unique Belgian craft brewery located deep beneath the ramparts of Ypres (Ieper), in the historic casemates of the city's fortifications in West Flanders. Ypres once had nearly 30 breweries and distilleries, but the last one closed its doors in 1976. It was not until 2014 that Brouwerij Kazematten revived the city's brewing tradition, becoming the first brewery to operate in Ypres in nearly four decades. The location itself is inseparable from the brewery's identity: history, place, and beer are deeply intertwined here. The brewery's portfolio centres on Belgian specialty beers, with a focus on blond, tripel, and dubbel styles. Their flagship beer, Wipers Times 14, is a Belgian blond ale with an alcohol content of 6.2% and a story rooted in the First World War heritage of the region. The name references the satirical trench newspaper produced by British soldiers near Ypres during WWI. Alongside Wipers Times, the brewery also produces a Tripel and other specialty beers that reflect both Belgian brewing craftsmanship and the rich history of the Ypres Salient. Brouwerij Kazematten is more than just a brewery — it is an immersive experience. Visitors descend into the atmospheric casemates to discover the story behind each beer. In 2024, the brewery celebrated its tenth anniversary, marking a decade of putting Ypres back on the Belgian beer map.
