A Historic Brewing
Liberty Lager is the result of a unique collaboration between TALEA Beer Co., a women-owned Brooklyn brewery, and the New York Public Library. The beer is based on a recipe that George Washington himself wrote down in 1757 during his military service as a colonel in the Virginia militia. This historical document is now part of the library's manuscript archives.
Modern Adaptation
TALEA approached this project with two distinct angles. Alongside a strict historical recreation, they developed Liberty Lager—a version tailored specifically for contemporary palates. By significantly reducing the molasses from the original formula, this amber lager at 5.5% ABV achieves a much crisper finish. The beer combines citrus hop character with herbal and grassy notes, featuring pale malt and caramel on the palate.
Tasting Profile
The nose presents citrus hop and citrus zest, while the palate showcases pale malt and caramel complexity. The finish is clean with soft bitterness, making this beer approachable for a wide audience.
Availability
Liberty Lager is available at TALEA's New York taprooms and select NYC restaurants and retailers.
