Washington's Beer is a unique collaboration between the New York Public Library and TALEA Beer Co., a women-owned Brooklyn brewery. The beer is based on a recipe that George Washington himself wrote down in 1757 in his military journal when he was a young colonel in the Virginia militia. This isn't a modern experiment—it's an authentic recreation of a formula nearly 270 years old.

The Brewing Process

This Small Beer is a strict historical recreation of the original recipe. It contains water, yeast, hops, and a substantial amount of molasses. At a modest 1.5% ABV, it follows the traditional approach where low-alcohol beers were consumed daily by soldiers. The final product is cloudy, dark amber in color, and meant to be served at room temperature.

Tasting Profile

The nose offers honey, molasses, and clove. On the palate, honey, molasses, and lactic/yogurt notes emerge, interspersed with funky Brett character. The finish reveals lactic/yogurt notes, vinegary accents, and a lingering finish.
