The Abdij der Trappisten van Westmalle is a Trappist abbey located in Westmalle, in the Antwerp province of Belgium. As an authentic Trappist brewery, the abbey has a long monastic brewing tradition, producing beer under the strict guidelines that define the Authentic Trappist Product designation. The brewery is situated at Antwerpsesteenweg 476 in Westmalle and remains one of the most respected names in the world of Belgian Trappist brewing. Westmalle's portfolio is rooted in the classic Trappist tradition. The brewery is best known for its Dubbel, a dark reddish-brown ale with a creamy head and rich malt character, and its iconic Tripel, a bright golden beer fermented to 9.5% ABV with notes of citrus and a hoppy, lightly bitter finish. These two beers represent the core of the Westmalle range and are considered benchmarks of their respective styles. The Westmalle Tripel is widely regarded as the 'Mother of All Tripels' — a touchstone for the entire tripel style worldwide. More recently, the monks decided to distribute their Westmalle Extra on a wider scale, a lighter Trappist beer that had previously been brewed primarily for the monks themselves. A dedicated glass for the Extra was even co-designed by Brother Benedikt, inspired by conical Trappist glasses from a century ago.
