Liefmans

Liefmans is one of Belgium's oldest and most storied breweries, with roots stretching back to 1679 in the heart of Oudenaarde, a city long associated with the tradition of Flemish brown ale. Around 1750, brewer Jacobus Liefmans relocated the brewery to its current site on the banks of the river, cementing its place in Belgian brewing history. After years as a family business and later under the ownership of Brouwerij RIVA, Liefmans was acquired by Duvel Moortgat in 2008, ensuring the continuation of its centuries-old brewing legacy. Liefmans is celebrated for its Flemish oud bruin ales, a traditional Belgian style defined by long maturation, gentle sourness and rich malt character. The brewery's portfolio counts 17 beers, with fruit-infused varieties playing a prominent role alongside the classic brown ales. Liefmans also serves as a sister blendery to Brewery Ommegang in the United States, collaborating on aged and blended sour beers that showcase the house character of long-lagered Oudenaarde ales. Historically brewed on-site in Oudenaarde, the facility today primarily functions as a blending and lagering house, where the slow, careful conditioning of wort remains central to the Liefmans identity. The brewery's deep ties to Oudenaarde and its role within the Duvel Moortgat group make it an enduring symbol of Flemish brewing heritage.
