Leidsch Bier
Netherlands · Founded in 2004
Leidsch Bier is a craft brewery based in Leiden, in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was founded in 2004 by Jan Willem Fukkink, with preparations already underway since 2003. Fukkink had been homebrewing since 2000 before establishing the brewery with a clear mission: to give the city of Leiden its own beer once again. The brewery produces small-batch ales that are rarely exported, keeping a strong local identity at the heart of the operation. The brewery's portfolio currently counts six beers, spanning a range of styles that reflect both traditional and contemporary Dutch craft brewing. Leidsch Bier is mentioned alongside other Leiden breweries such as Pronck when discussing styles like porter and stout, indicating a willingness to explore diverse and characterful beer styles. Its small-batch approach means each brew receives careful attention, resulting in beers with a distinctly local character. To mark its tenth anniversary, Leidsch Bier brewed a special light anniversary beer, notable for its use of champagne yeast, which earned it the French name La something — a nod to the festive effervescence the yeast imparts. The brewery has also participated in events celebrating historical Dutch beer styles such as kuitbier, connecting modern craft brewing with the rich medieval brewing heritage of the Low Countries.
