Klosterbrauerei Weltenburg is widely regarded as the oldest monastery brewery in the world, tracing its origins back to 1050 AD. Located within the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg — known as the Abbey of Saint George — in Weltenburg, a district of Kelheim in the Altmühl Valley of Bavaria, Germany, the brewery has been producing beer for nearly a thousand years. The abbey itself is dramatically situated along the Danube Gorge, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs, making it one of the most scenic brewery locations in the world. A Bavarian brewery has recently acquired the historic operation, marking a significant transition in its long history. The brewery produces nine varieties of beer, with a portfolio rooted in traditional Bavarian brewing. Among its offerings is a notable Bockbier, the Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock, which carries an alcohol content of 7.3% and has received considerable recognition from beer enthusiasts. The range also includes a Kloster Hell, reflecting the lighter, approachable lager styles typical of the Bavarian tradition. Seven monks have historically been involved in the brewing process, lending the beers an authentic monastic character.
