Mikkeller is a Danish craft brewery founded in Copenhagen in 2006 by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, a former physics and chemistry teacher who began brewing beer as a hobby. The very first Mikkeller beer was brewed in 2005 at the Danish microbrewery Ørbæk, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most internationally recognised craft beer brands in the world. Often credited with helping to drive the Nordic beer revolution, Mikkeller has placed Denmark firmly on the global craft beer map. Operating as a nomadic or gypsy brewery, Mikkeller has no single production facility of its own and instead brews at partner breweries around the world — a model rooted in contract brewing that the brand has returned to in recent years, including in the US market. This approach allows Mikkeller to experiment freely across a wide range of beer styles, from wild ales and sour beers to IPAs and imperial stouts, consistently pushing the boundaries of flavour and craft. Today, Mikkeller distributes its beers to over 40 countries worldwide. Beyond brewing, Mikkeller has built a global hospitality network of taprooms and bars, including Warpigs, its acclaimed brewpub concept. The brand has also partnered with Carlsberg to further strengthen its reach.
