South African Breweries (SAB) traces its origins to 1895, when it was established as Castle Brewery in Johannesburg to meet the surging demand for beer from miners and prospectors flocking to the goldfields of South Africa. Two years after its founding, the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange, becoming the first industrial company to achieve this milestone. Over the following century, SAB grew from a regional brewer into one of the most significant brewing organisations in the world, eventually expanding into Europe and beyond during the 1990s. SAB's portfolio has long been anchored by Castle Lager, its flagship beer and one of the most recognised lager brands across Africa. The brewery's range covers a variety of styles, with a strong focus on accessible, well-crafted lagers suited to the South African climate and market. Its technical brewing expertise and large-scale production infrastructure helped it build a reputation for consistent quality across its brands. In 2002, South African Breweries merged with Miller Brewing Company to form SABMiller, which at its peak was among the largest brewers by volume globally, operating in more than 60 countries across five continents. SABMiller was subsequently acquired by AB InBev in 2016, though The South African Breweries continues to operate as a subsidiary, maintaining its presence and heritage in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
