Anheuser-Busch traces its roots to 1852, when German immigrant George Schneider founded the Bavarian Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri. Eberhard Anheuser acquired the struggling operation in 1860, renaming it E. Anheuser & Company. His son-in-law Adolphus Busch joined the business in 1859 after arriving in the United States at age 18, and together they transformed the brewery into one of the most powerful brewing enterprises in American history.
