Brouwerij Contreras
Belgium · Founded in 1818
Brouwerij Contreras is one of Belgium's oldest family breweries, founded in 1818 in Gavere, a small town in the East Flanders province. Housed in a converted farmstead on the outskirts of the village, the brewery has been crafting beer for over two centuries, making it a living monument to Belgian brewing heritage. Its address on Molenstraat 110 in Gavere has been a hub of brewing activity since the early nineteenth century. The brewery is best known for its traditional Belgian ale portfolio, which includes several iconic beers deeply rooted in local culture. Tonneke, an amber-coloured Spéciale Belge, is perhaps the most beloved: locals have ordered it by that nickname for so long that the brewery eventually made it official. Alongside Tonneke, the Valeir range forms the backbone of the portfolio, comprising four beers that pay tribute to the brewery's rich heritage. Valeir Extra, for example, is noted for its inviting sweet malt backbone balanced with a firm hop bitterness, sitting somewhat outside conventional style categories. Contreras remains a small, authentic Flemish brewery with a strong regional identity and a firm foothold in Belgian beer culture. Its centuries-long history and commitment to traditional brewing methods make it a notable stop in the broader landscape of Belgian beer tourism and a respected name among beer enthusiasts across Flanders and beyond.
