Maredret
Belgium · Founded in 1893
Maredret is a Benedictine abbey located in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region of Wallonia, Belgium, founded in 1893 by Agnès de Hemptinne and six nuns on an estate of 15 hectares. For many years the community of around twenty sisters focused on spiritual life and traditional crafts, but financial pressures eventually led the abbey to explore brewing as a means of sustaining itself. In collaboration with brewer and importer John Martin, the nuns developed a range of abbey beers that draw inspiration from centuries of monastic brewing tradition — making Maredret one of the very few abbeys in the world where nuns, rather than monks, are at the heart of beer production. The Maredret portfolio centres on three signature beers: Altus, Triplus and Extra. Maredret Altus is a 6.8% amber ale brewed with cloves and juniper, giving it a distinctly aromatic and spiced character. Maredret Triplus is an 8% abbey-style beer brewed with spelt, coriander and sage, offering a herbal complexity that sets it apart from conventional Belgian tripels. The beers were developed together with brewer Thomas Vandelanotte, and the use of heritage grains and botanicals reflects both the abbey's agricultural surroundings and its commitment to a unique, terroir-driven approach. Maredret attracted significant international attention when its story was covered by Reuters in 2021, highlighting the historic significance of nuns entering a brewing tradition long dominated by monks. The biers are distributed through John Martin and have appeared at specialist beer events such as Belgian Beer Week at The Rake in London, cementing their reputation as some of the most intriguing abbey beers in contemporary Belgian brewing.
