DAB Dortmunder Actien Brauerei
Germany · Founded in 1868
DAB – Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (Dortmund Stockholders' Brewery) – was established in 1868 in Dortmund, Germany. Born in one of Europe's great brewing cities, DAB emerged during a golden era for German lager production, when Dortmund was cementing its reputation as a powerhouse of bottom-fermented beer. The brewery's name reflects its origins as a joint-stock company, a model that helped fuel its ambitious growth from the very beginning. Over the decades, DAB became part of the broader German brewing landscape and is today associated with the Oetker brewery group. DAB is best known for its Dortmunder-style lagers, a distinctive beer style characterised by a clean, firm malt body, moderate bitterness, and a crisp, dry finish – sitting between the lighter Pilsner and the fuller Munich Helles in character. The brewery's flagship DAB Original is widely regarded as a classic example of the Dortmunder Export style, a style that earned recognition in authoritative beer references such as Randy Mosher's *Tasting Beer*. The Dortmunder Export is brewed to showcase balance and drinkability, with a slightly higher alcohol content than a standard Pilsner. DAB holds the distinction of being recognised as one of the most exported German beers in the world, demonstrating the global appeal of its traditional Dortmund brewing heritage. Vintage DAB breweriana, including coasters and branded merchandise, remains collectible among beer enthusiasts worldwide.
