Brouwerij Sint Christoffel
Netherlands · Founded in 1986
Brouwerij Sint Christoffel was a Dutch craft brewery based in Roermond, in the southern province of Limburg. Founded in 1986 by Leo Brand, the brewery was one of the pioneers of the Dutch microbrewery movement, at a time when independent small-scale brewing was still a rarity in the Netherlands. The brewery took its name from Saint Christopher, the patron saint of Roermond. It operated for nearly three decades before closing its doors in 2013. Sint Christoffel built its reputation on German-inspired lager styles, most notably its flagship Christoffel Blond — a dry, hoppy Pilsner brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, the traditional German beer purity law. The beers were characterised by their pronounced hop bitterness, clean malt backbone, and bottom-fermented brewing approach. At a time when Dutch beer culture was dominated by large industrial lagers, Sint Christoffel stood out by offering full-flavoured, unfiltered and unpasteurised beers with genuine craft character. Over the years, Christoffel Blond gained a loyal following among Dutch beer enthusiasts and earned international recognition in craft beer circles. The brewery was frequently cited as a trailblazer for the revival of quality beer culture in the Netherlands. Though no longer active, Brouwerij Sint Christoffel holds a firm place in the history of Dutch independent brewing.
