Grimbergen Abbey Brewery is rooted in one of Belgium's oldest brewing traditions. The Abbey of Grimbergen was founded in 1128, and brewing has been part of its identity for nearly nine centuries. After more than 200 years without an active brewery on site, brewing returned to Grimbergen Abbey in 2021 with the opening of a state-of-the-art brewery built in close partnership between the Norbertine fathers of the abbey and the Carlsberg Group. The project marks a historic new chapter for Belgian beer, reviving an ancient craft at the very place where it all began. The Grimbergen Abbey Brewery functions as an innovation hub for craft brewing, focusing on premium abbey-style beers that honour the abbey's long heritage. The first three beers produced at the on-site brewery were the Grimbergen Magnum Opus Brut Beer, the Grimbergen Ignis Quadruple, and a third specialty brew. These releases showcase a range of complex, fermentation-driven styles that reflect both tradition and modern brewing craftsmanship. Grimbergen holds a central position in Carlsberg's premium brands portfolio, giving the brewery significant international reach. The Grimbergen Abbey Brewery also features an on-site bar and an immersive visitor experience, which was extended and reopened to offer guests an in-depth look at the abbey's brewing history and the revival of this centuries-old tradition.
