Rochefort, officially known as Trappistes Rochefort, is one of the world's most revered Trappist breweries, located within the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in Rochefort, Belgium. The monks began brewing beer around 1595, making this one of the oldest monastic brewing traditions in existence. The abbey itself was rebuilt in 1887, and the first modern Rochefort beer was brewed around 1899. Today, Rochefort is one of only nine breweries in the world officially recognised as an Authentic Trappist Product, a distinction shared with just a handful of Belgian abbeys including Chimay, Orval, Westmalle and Westvleteren. The brewery's portfolio centres on three iconic dark abbey ales: Rochefort 6, 8 and 10. The numbers refer to an old Belgian gravity system, reflecting the increasing strength and complexity of each beer. These are rich, contemplative ales brewed with the abbey's own house yeast, delivering deep malt character, complex dark fruit notes and a distinctive monastic depth that sets them apart from any commercial equivalent. A fourth beer has also been added to the range in recent years. Rochefort 10 is widely regarded as one of the finest beers ever brewed, frequently appearing near the top of global beer rankings. Its combination of high alcohol, remarkable drinkability and extraordinary complexity has earned it near-legendary status among beer enthusiasts worldwide. The excellence of these beers is attributed to centuries of accumulated knowledge passed down through generations of monks.
