Axes Castellum Kloosterbier is a brewery based in Zwolle, in the Dutch province of Overijssel. Founded in 2017, it holds the distinction of being the only genuine monastery beer from Zwolle. The roots of the brand, however, reach much further back in history: the origin of Axes Castellum is traced to 1576, when a special beer was brewed in honour of the jubilee of Leonardus van Dalen, connected to the Dominican Order in Zwolle. This historical thread gives the brewery a deeply local and monastic identity. Axes Castellum brews in the tradition of abbey and monastery beers, focusing on pure ingredients and time-honoured techniques.
