Augustiner-Bräu is Munich's oldest brewery, with roots stretching back to 1328, when Augustinian monks established a monastery brewery in the heart of Bavaria. Following secularisation in 1803, the brewery transitioned into private hands and has remained an independent, family-influenced operation ever since. Since 1996, the majority ownership has rested with the foundation established by Edith Haberland-Wagner (1899–1996), a descendant of the brewery's modern founding family, ensuring that Augustiner-Bräu continues to operate outside the influence of large brewing conglomerates. The brewery's portfolio is firmly rooted in the Bavarian lager tradition. Its flagship Lagerbier Hell is a classic Munich Helles, praised for its soft malt character and delicate hop balance. The Edelstoff, an Export-style lager, is widely regarded as one of the brewery's most distinctive offerings and enjoys strong distribution across Bavaria and beyond. Augustiner also brews a traditional Märzenbier, which has long been associated with the Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich. In 2024, the brewery expanded its range for the first time in 38 years, introducing an alcohol-free Helles. Augustiner-Bräu has two venues near Munich's central station, including the celebrated Augustiner-Keller, a grand beer hall and garden that embodies traditional Bavarian drinking culture. The brewery's commitment to traditional brewing methods and its independent status have earned it a devoted following among locals and visitors alike.
