Altenburger Brauerei

Altenburger Brauerei is a historic brewery located in Altenburg, in the federal state of Thuringia, eastern Germany. Founded in 1871 as a joint-stock brewery (Aktienbrauerei), it quickly established itself as one of the most modern breweries in Europe at the time. Over more than 150 years, the brewery has remained a cornerstone of the regional brewing tradition, and its museum offers visitors an insight into the history and production of beer in the area. The brewery's portfolio is rooted in traditional German brewing styles, with Thuringian lager and bock beers among its recognised offerings. Altenburger has built a reputation for consistent quality and craftsmanship, earning recognition at international competitions such as the European Beer Challenge 2024 and the Finest Beer Selection 2023. The brewery continues to invest in its future, having recently developed a climate transition plan in collaboration with Krones' sustainability consultancy team to ensure responsible production for years to come. Altenburger Brauerei's bock beer has been highlighted among the best-rated beers in eastern Germany by TasteAtlas, reflecting the brewery's standing in the region. With its combination of deep-rooted heritage, award-winning beers and a forward-looking approach to sustainability, Altenburger remains one of Thuringia's most respected brewing institutions.
