Zlatý Bažant — which translates to 'Golden Pheasant' in English — is Slovakia's most iconic beer brand, with roots stretching back to the 1960s in the southern Slovak town of Hurbanovo, where the foundation stone was laid in 1964 and the malthouse opened shortly after. The brewery was officially founded in the mid-to-late 1960s, with various sources placing the year between 1964 and 1969. In 1995, Heineken acquired the brewery, integrating it into its international portfolio and helping to elevate the brand's profile both domestically and abroad. As the volume leader within Heineken Slovensko's portfolio, Zlatý Bažant holds a commanding position in the Slovak beer market, at one point reaching a market share of 16.6%. The brand is best known for its premium lager, a style deeply rooted in Central European brewing tradition — clean, well-attenuated, and built on quality malt and balanced hop character. Alongside the flagship lager, Heineken Slovensko has expanded the Zlatý Bažant range to include additional styles and line extensions that cater to a broad audience of beer drinkers. Zlatý Bažant is widely recognised as Slovakia's leading premium beer brand and remains the country's most prominent brewing name on the international stage. Its long history in Hurbanovo, combined with the scale and reach of the Heineken group, has cemented its status as the benchmark for Slovak lager both at home and in export markets.
