SweetWater Brewing Company is a craft brewery founded in 1997 by college roommates Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney in Atlanta, Georgia. Their shared passion for beer took root during their student years in Colorado in the early 1990s, where West Coast brewing styles sparked an inspiration that would eventually shape one of the Southeast's most recognized brewing brands. The brewery brought a distinctly West Coast sensibility to the Atlanta beer scene from day one. SweetWater built its reputation on unpasteurized, hop-forward beers rooted in West Coast brewing traditions. The portfolio spans a wide range of styles, with bold hop character running through much of the lineup. The brewery's 420 Extra Pale Ale became a flagship and cultural touchstone, while the Hop Hash series further cemented SweetWater's reputation among hop enthusiasts. Their tagline — "Don't Float the Mainstream" — reflects a brand ethos centered on independent craft brewing. By 2022, SweetWater was celebrating its 25th anniversary and had grown to become the 11th largest craft brewery in the United States by volume. The brewery expanded distribution aggressively across the country, including into California, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon. In late 2020, SweetWater was acquired by Tilray Brands, marking a significant milestone in the company's evolution from Atlanta startup to nationally distributed craft brand.
