Mahou is one of Spain's most iconic beer brands, with roots stretching back to 1890 when it was founded in Madrid under the name Hijos de Casimiro Mahou, fábrica de hielo y cerveza, by the children of Alsatian-born Casimiro Mahou Bierhans. The brewery opened its first facility on Amaniel Street in the Spanish capital, establishing a brewing tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation for over 135 years. Today, Mahou operates as part of Grupo Mahou-San Miguel, the largest beer group in Spain, formed after Mahou acquired San Miguel in 2000. The Mahou-San Miguel portfolio has grown considerably over the decades, expanding to include regional brands such as Reina from the Canary Islands, added in 2004, and Cervezas Alhambra, acquired in 2007. Mahou's beers are rooted in the lager tradition, offering accessible and refreshing styles that have made the brand a staple on Spanish taps and in households across the country. The range has continued to evolve, with numerous successful beers added to the lineup over the years. Beyond Spain, Mahou-San Miguel has pursued international growth through strategic investments, including becoming a shareholder in Founders Brewing Co. in the United States in 2015 and investing in Colorado-based Avery Brewing. By 2019, Mahou USA had helped Founders reach full national distribution across all 50 US states, reflecting the group's ambition to expand its footprint in the global craft beer landscape.
