Kerel Stout from VBDCK Brewery is a dark beer with refined restraint. The brewery, based in Tielrode, traces its roots to 1867 and is known for beers that eschew pretence in favour of genuine character. In the glass, a black beer presents itself with a light brown foam head. The nose is led by roasted malts with hints of milk chocolate and cappuccino. On the palate, dark malt flavours dominate: coffee, cocoa and caramel form the foundation, balanced by restrained hop bitterness that prevents heaviness. This export stout is lighter in character than many peers, making it accessible without sacrificing depth. At 4.5% ABV, it is a carefully constructed stout that favours subtlety over power.
