Hertog Jan Vatgerijpt Bourbon VOC Spices is an ambitious expression from Arcen-based Hertog Jan, in which their Grand Prestige—a dark, strong ale at 11.5%—matures for months in American Bourbon barrels. In collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Luc Kusters, the barrels are then infused with a historical blend of VOC-era spices: ginger, clove, black pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. The spices dominate the profile and lend the beer a distinct winter character. The Bourbon barrel wood contributes vanilla, coconut and caramel notes, but these sweet elements are substantially tempered by the assertive spice blend. A layered beer where malt and hop play a supporting role while the spices command the narrative.
