Pivovara Medvedgrad
Croatia · Founded in 1994
Pivovara Medvedgrad is Croatia's oldest independent microbrewery, founded on December 22nd, 1994, in Zagreb. The brewery opened its doors on the corner of Savska and Vukovarska streets, marking a turning point in Croatian craft brewing history. A family-owned operation from the start, Medvedgrad has grown steadily over the decades and today employs 121 people, making it not only the oldest but also the largest craft brewery in Croatia. Its name references Medvedgrad, the historic fortress overlooking Zagreb from the slopes of Medvednica mountain. Medvedgrad specialises in craft lagers brewed in the traditional way using natural ingredients, though its portfolio extends well beyond a single style. Among their beers you'll find pilsners, amber lagers, doppelbocks and dark bocks, showcasing a strong command of German-influenced lager brewing. Notable examples include the Grička Vještica Doppelbock (7.5% ABV), with its bready malt, caramel and toffee character, and the CugMajstor Pilsner (6.1% ABV), hopped with Aurora, Tettnanger and Hallertauer Mittelfrueh. The brewery also produces Zlatni Medvjed, one of its best-known beers. With four pubs in its network, Medvedgrad offers drinkers a direct and lively taproom experience in Zagreb. The brewery has been widely credited as a key driver of craft beer culture in Croatia, a scene that had grown to 106 breweries by 2023. Collaborations such as the Ursa Major Amber Lager with Nebo demonstrate the brewery's continued creative ambition.
