Mongozo is a Belgian beer brand with roots in a unique cross-cultural collaboration. In 1998, Henrique Kabia and Jan Fleurkens launched Mongozo Palmnut, the brand's first beer, bringing together African brewing heritage and Belgian craftsmanship. The name "Mongozo" means "cheers" in Henrique Kabia's mother tongue. The brand is brewed under the umbrella of Brouwerij Huyghe, a renowned Belgian family brewery based in Melle, East Flanders, which manages a diverse portfolio of over 14 beer brands. In 2001, Mongozo Banana was introduced, followed by Mongozo Quinua in 2003, expanding the range with exotic and distinctive ingredients. Mongozo is best known for its gluten-free beers, making it a standout in the Belgian beer landscape. The portfolio includes a variety of styles, from the tropical Mongozo Banana — brewed in collaboration with Mongozo African Breweries using Max Havelaar bananas — to Mongozo Buckwheat White, a light and refreshing wheat beer with 4.8% ABV. The brand's use of alternative grains such as buckwheat and quinua, alongside fair-trade ingredients, gives Mongozo a distinctive identity that sets it apart from traditional Belgian beer styles. Mongozo has contributed to Brouwerij Huyghe's impressive international medal haul, with the brewery earning recognition across multiple categories. Notably, Brouwerij Huyghe is cited as the only Belgian brewery holding a beer — Mongozo — that carries specific gluten-free certification, underlining the brand's commitment to inclusive and innovative brewing.
