Macedonian Thrace Brewery
Greece · Founded in 1996
Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB) is a Greek brewery founded in 1996 by Demetri Politopoulos, based in Komotini, in the Thrace region of northern Greece. Born from its founder's deep love for Greece, MTB set out with a clear ambition: to craft an authentically Greek beer at a time when the domestic market was dominated by international giants. The brewery has since grown into one of the most prominent independent breweries in the country, with additional branches in Athens and state-of-the-art brewing facilities recognised among the most modern worldwide. MTB's signature product is Vergina Beer, introduced in 1998 and originally branded as the first 100% authentic Greek beer. The portfolio spans several lager styles, including the flagship Vergina Lager, a Premium Lager at 5.0% ABV, alongside Macedonian Thrace Hillas and Prost, both Pale Lagers also at 5.0% ABV. The brewery is known for its attention to flavour, quality brewing standards, and distinctive branding rooted in Greek heritage. MTB has drawn significant international attention through a landmark legal case against Heineken and its subsidiary Athenian Brewery, with a Dutch court set to award MTB at least €83 million in damages for proven market abuses in Greece — a case closely watched by independent brewers across Europe. In 2025, MTB hosted the 6th Independent Craft Brewers Roundtable (ICBR 2025) in Komotini, further cementing its role as a champion of independent brewing.
