Hövels Hausbrauerei is a historic brewery located in Dortmund, Germany, with roots stretching back more than 270 years. The brewery was re-established in 1984 in memory of its former founder, Wilhelm von Hövel, as a specialty brewery at Hoher Wall in the heart of Dortmund. Over the decades it became a beloved institution, combining high-quality beer with the warm and cosy hospitality that is characteristic of Westphalia. Sadly, brewing operations at the Hoher Wall location ceased in February 2026 after the Radeberger Gruppe decided to close the Hausbrauerei. The brewery's portfolio centered around traditional German beer styles, with the Hövels Original — an Altbier — as its signature brew. This amber beer is known for its malt-forward character with hints of caramel in the nose and a fruity, well-balanced taste, topped with an off-white head. The range also included wheat beers, staying true to classic German brewing traditions rooted in hop and malt craftsmanship. Beyond its beers, Hövels Hausbrauerei was a destination in itself. The taproom offered immersive brewery tours and a brand exhibition showcasing highlights from over 270 years of brewing history. With a strong local following and a rating of 4.0 from over 600 visitors on travel platforms, Hövels stood as a proud symbol of Dortmund's rich beer culture and Westphalian gemütlichkeit.
