Brauerei Diebels is a historic German brewery situated in Issum on the Lower Rhine, founded in 1878 by Josef Diebels. Over more than a century, it established itself as one of the most recognisable names in German brewing, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Lower Rhine region. The brewery's address today is Brauerei-Diebels-Straße 1, a street bearing its own name — a testament to its longstanding presence in the community. In later decades, Diebels was acquired by Interbrew and subsequently became part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev portfolio, one of the world's largest brewing groups. Diebels is best known for brewing Altbier, a traditional top-fermented German beer style closely associated with the Lower Rhine and Düsseldorf region. Altbier is characterised by its copper-brown colour, balanced hop bitterness and smooth malt character — a result of warm fermentation followed by cold conditioning. As a specialist in this style, Diebels has long been considered a key player in the Altbier segment, representing the style on a national and international scale within the AB InBev brand portfolio of nearly 300 beers. The brewery's heritage is reflected even in collector culture: vintage enamel signs bearing the logo of a stag and the text "Brauerei Diebels Söhne 1878" remain sought-after items. Operating under AB InBev, Diebels continues to carry the legacy of traditional German top-fermented brewing.
