Three Horses Beer, commonly known as THB, is Madagascar's national beer and a proud product of Brasseries STAR, the island's pioneering brewing company. THB entered production in 1958, marking STAR's official entry into brewing and establishing itself as Madagascar's first major beer brand. Since then, it has become deeply woven into the fabric of Malagasy culture and daily life, enjoyed by locals and travellers alike across the Red Island. THB is brewed as a pale lager in the pilsner style, fermented to a crisp 5.4% ABV. The beer is celebrated for its light, refreshing character — well-suited to Madagascar's tropical climate. As a pilsner, it follows a tradition of clean, approachable lager brewing, with a balanced malt base and a mild hop profile that makes it easy-drinking and widely appealing. Brasseries STAR expanded its brewing capacity over the decades, opening a second brewery in Antsiranana (Diégo) in 1968. THB has earned recognition beyond Madagascar's borders, appearing in the Heineken group's international portfolio and gaining a following among travellers exploring the island. It is frequently cited as a favourite among visitors as a honest, characterful national lager. The brand also carries weight regionally, with THB's pilsner being noted as an emerging presence in East African markets.
