Stiegl
Austria · Founded in 1492
Stiegl is one of Europe's oldest and most storied breweries, with roots stretching back to 1492 in the historic city of Salzburg, Austria. First appearing in legal records that same year, the brewery takes its name from a set of steps — "Stiegl" meaning staircase in German — that once led to its original location. Nestled at the foothills of the Alps, Stiegl has been brewing continuously for over five centuries and holds the distinction of being Austria's largest privately-owned brewery, producing more than one million hectolitres of beer per year. Stiegl's portfolio is rooted in the Austrian brewing tradition, with the Märzen lager forming the backbone of its range. Alongside this classic style, the brewery produces a broad spectrum of beers, including the Stiegl-Paracelsus-Zwickl, an unfiltered lager that began as a trial brew before earning a permanent place in the lineup, and the Grapefruit Radler, a refreshing beer-and-juice blend that has found fans well beyond Austria's borders. Stiegl is committed to traditional brewing techniques and natural ingredients, values that have guided the brewery across generations. Visitors to Salzburg can explore the brewery's remarkable heritage at the Stiegl Brauwelt, a dedicated brewery museum and experience centre where more than 530 years of history are brought to life. Guests are treated to guided tours and beer tastings, with an audio guide available in six languages. Stiegl's reputation has also grown internationally, with the brewery now exported to markets including the United Kingdom.
