Starobrno Brewery
Czech Republic · Founded in 1872
Starobrno Brewery, located in Brno in the heart of Moravia, Czech Republic, is one of the country's most historically rooted brewing institutions. Brewing traditions in Brno stretch back nearly 800 years, and the modern brewery traces its direct lineage to a brewery founded in 1325. The current facility on Hlinky Street, near Mendel Square, was established in 1872 by the Mandel and Hayek company, transforming the original manor brewery into a modern industrial operation. The brewery has operated from the same location ever since, making it a true landmark of Czech brewing heritage. In 2003, Starobrno was acquired by Heineken through the purchase of Austrian Bräu-Union AG, bringing it under the international Heineken portfolio alongside the Royal Brewery of Krušovice and the Velké Březno brewery. Starobrno is proudly positioned as a Moravian beer, a regional identity that sets it apart within the Czech beer landscape. The brewery is best known for its Czech lagers, including its flagship Czech Premium Lager — a bright golden beer with a fine, well-formed head, characteristic of the classic Bohemian and Moravian lager tradition. The brand embraces a distinctly Moravian character: grounded, clear-eyed, and unpretentious. In recent years, Starobrno has shown a willingness to evolve, introducing new beers such as Štatl, a bold addition designed to stir the Czech brewing scene while staying rooted in Moravian brewing culture. The brewery also welcomes visitors, offering guided tours that bring its centuries-long brewing story to life.
