Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu
Germany · Founded in 1397
Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu is one of Munich's most historic breweries, with roots dating back to 1397, making it one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in Bavaria, Germany. The brewery as it exists today is the result of a merger between two storied Munich institutions: Spaten-Brauerei and Franziskaner-Brauerei. In 1997, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu became part of the Paulaner Group, cementing its place within the broader Munich brewing landscape while maintaining its commitment to the Reinheitsgebot, the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. The brewery produces a portfolio deeply rooted in Bavarian brewing tradition. Spaten is celebrated for its Münchener lagers, brewed with the clean, malt-forward character that defines the style. The Franziskaner side of the house specialises in wheat beers, most notably the Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier, a naturally cloudy, yeast-fermented wheat beer praised for its authentic, spiced character and full-bodied flavour. Together, these two brewing traditions offer a comprehensive range of classic Bavarian beer styles. Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu is one of the six official breweries licensed to serve beer at the Munich Oktoberfest, the world's most famous beer festival. This coveted status reflects the brewery's enduring reputation and deep ties to Bavarian culture. The Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier in particular has earned recognition among wheat beer enthusiasts as one of the finer examples of the style.
