Samuel Smith's Brewery
United Kingdom · Founded in 1758
Samuel Smith Old Brewery is one of Britain's most storied and traditional breweries, founded in 1758 in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, making it the oldest brewery in Yorkshire. The brewery has remained deeply rooted in its heritage, continuing to operate with time-honoured methods that set it apart from virtually every other commercial brewery in the modern era. Samuel Smith's is known for a broad and characterful portfolio of ales and lagers, ranging from classic British styles to fruit beers. Among its flagship beers are the Nut Brown Ale and the Pure Brewed Organic Lager, both of which have been made available in the United States market in can format. The brewery also produces an Organic Cherry Fruit Beer, reflecting a commitment to both traditional and organic brewing. A hallmark of Samuel Smith's approach is its dedication to craft, exemplified by the brewery's maintenance of an in-house cooperage — a rare distinction today — where apprentice coopers still complete full five-year training programmes. The brewery's commitment to tradition extends to its delivery methods: beer is still transported to local pubs by horse-drawn cart. In the 1990s, Samuel Smith's purchased and restored Melbourn Bros. Brewery, preserving much of its Victorian equipment. The brewery also operates an extensive pub estate across Britain.
