Nevel, formerly known as Katjelam and also referred to as Nevel Wild Ales, was an independent craft brewery based in Nijmegen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Founded in 2014, the brewery built a reputation for its authentic and sustainable approach to brewing, drawing deep inspiration from traditional beer styles and natural fermentation techniques. The brewery's portfolio centred around wild and spontaneously fermented ales, with a particular passion for styles such as saison and stock ale. Nevel was known for its use of wild yeasts sourced from natural environments, allowing indigenous microflora to shape the character of each beer. This unconventional approach to fermentation gave their beers a distinctly complex and terroir-driven quality. Flagship beers included Meander, a fruity wild ale with notes of peach, showcasing the brewery's affinity for expressive, nature-forward brewing. Nevel gained recognition well beyond the Dutch borders, with their beers being imported internationally and featured at specialist wild beer festivals such as Carnivale Brettanomyces. The brewery was also noted for its commitment to sustainability, a theme explored in depth by specialist beer publication Pellicle. Nevel has since ceased operations, but its influence on the Dutch craft beer scene and the wider world of wild ales remains significant.
