Mahou San Miguel is Spain's largest brewing company and a 100% Spanish-owned family business with a history spanning more than 125 years. The group was formed in 2000 when Madrid-based brewer Mahou acquired a stake in San Miguel, one of Spain's most iconic beer brands. San Miguel itself traces its roots back to 1890, when it was first brewed in Manila. Today, the Madrid-headquartered group operates eight brewing centres, seven of which are located in Spain, and holds a national production share of approximately 34%. The portfolio of Mahou San Miguel covers a broad range of beer styles, with lager and pilsner as the core styles. The group produces over 70% of all Spanish beer consumed worldwide and distributes its brands across 70 countries, making it one of the most internationally recognised brewing groups from southern Europe. The flagship brands Mahou and San Miguel each carry their own character, with San Miguel being particularly well known as a refreshing pale lager. Beyond its Spanish roots, Mahou San Miguel has expanded its international footprint through strategic partnerships and investments in craft brewing. The company became a shareholder in Michigan-based Founders Brewing in 2015 and later invested in Colorado-based Avery Brewing, demonstrating a commitment to broadening its presence in the North American craft beer scene.
